A couple of weeks ago when I tried to start my car it made a very loud pop ( under hood )and would not start. it acted like a car with a cracked distributor cap.when i crank it over it would try to start but backfire & crank slow. I came back a couple hours later to work on it and it started fine.I checked the coils and one of them had a crack on the bottom so i figured that was the pop i heard. I changed the coil and the car ran fine for 2 days. On the third day the car would not start again. No pop this time but backfire and no start. I changed the ignition module and the car ran fine for a day and then would not start at all.I had it towed to a repair shop. They had the car for several days, checked and cleaned connectors to the computer,  module and firewall and could not get it to act up again. I picked up the car and the next day -same problem. they replaced the ignition module with a new Delco for me to try. I picked up the car ,it lasted one day and it is doing it again. No start, backfires. when it didnt start this time there was a stong odor of fuel. I tried again about one hour later and the car started. The only computer code that was set was a code for timeing and that has only set twice when the check engine light came on.

Thanks,

What was the code # that you got ?. If you are having this hard no start problem only in the early mornings and or when the weather is damp you may have a condensation absorbtion problem with the cap and or with the crank shaft sensor.

Let me know what the code # was.

This car has no distibutor cap. It has an ignition module with 3 coils. The mechanic did not tell me what the code # was, he just said it was for timeing.
One of the times it acted up i drove the car in the rain in the morning and it would not start that night. The car was outside in rain all night and when i tried it the next morning it started right up with no problem. That night i drove the car to the shop with no problem. The car would not start last night and will not start again this morning. It ties to start but will backfire, acts like it has a timeing problem, will only run for less than 1 minute. After it stops i can hear the fuel pump running for a couple of seconds. I can smell fuel.

Thanks for Your'e help

Answer
OK, No dist cap, I should have known that but with answering over 75 questions daily on 2 different baords I sometimes forget what system is in what vehicle.

OK, I REALLY need to know what the code was, Without the code I can only give you the most common possible faults that occur.

1. An intermittent faulty temperature sensitive CRANK SHAFT SENSOR.

2. A wiring problem between the crank shaft sensor and the ignition module.

There are numerous other possibilities, But without that code # we can guess until the cow'some home.
