how can i put a camshaft drive gear and thrust plate on without removing the engine?

Hello Terry,
You don't say what you are working on, but usually you can do it in place.
Do NOT pound it on, though, and you run the chance of pushing the expansion plug out of the back end of the block, as well as damaging the oil pump/distributor drive gear, and lifters.
