Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: Olds Aurora 2001 V6, pitched whine, olds aurora

Question
I had the car serviced (52,000 miles) last week and the Dealer replaced a tie-rod in addition to the normal service and brake job.  The next day I noticed a high pitched whine from under the hood.  I checked the steering fluid and topped it off - no change at all to the noise.  Yesterday the Dealer told me that the air compressor was in need of replacement, for a cost of $1300.

I am not too confident about the Dealer anymore.  Any thoughts on this?  Is an air compressor likely to go at only 52,000 miles?  Thanks.
