Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: Engine 85 Olds 307 ? v-8, pvc valve, valve stems

Question
MOM's 85 olds cutlas supreme 91000 mi.suddenly
started to use oil approximately a quart every
two or three hundred mi. No smoke, no burnt oil
smell, no oil on the garage floor, runs good.  All
the obvious things have been checked, such as:
PVC valve, no one seems to have any idea that we
have asked without going into the engine.  Car
has one owner, its always been serviced regularly.
Thank you for any help. LD Waterson, Manchester,

Answer
Hello LD,
The valve guide seals have a tendency to get brittle and crack with age, then oil can be sucked down the intake valve stems and burned in the engine.
The seals can be replaced without removing the heads.

One other thing that should be checked is the air filter to see if it is real dirty, or oil soaked.
