Question

It's me again. Well we replaced the fuel pump and fuel filter, unfortunately this did not fix the problem. Now we are going to try the cranksensor, only one problem, where is it located and how do we go about fixing/changing it? Below is the information in our emails. Thank you again for your help.

1994 Oldsmobile Regency 98
My car stalls while driving down the road, then usually starts right back up. Once or twice it has not started first thing in the morning, until after I have tried to start it a few times, then it will fire right up. It turned over but wouldn't start. Another time after I shut it off for about 30 mins, it would not start for about 30 more mins, then after it got going down the road it stalled, (does no spitting or sputtering, it just shuts off). I had it pulled to my home, then when I tried to start it, it acted like the starter was bad (clicked). A few days later it wouldn't start at all as if the battery was dead, but the starter clicked. The starter was taken off and tested ok, put old starter back on and car started fine. Drove it for the day going places, turning it off and on worked fine. Then it stalled out again (just shut off). I listened for the fuel pump at the gas fill, I did hear it working. But... when it worked the first time, I listened for it again right after(turning on and back off) and heard nothing. Is that normal? And do you know why my car stops running like described above. I did have the test ran on it for codes and nothing came up, said car was ok. Does the car have to be in the failure mode for the test to read accurate? Please if you can, HELP!!
Thank You

HI VICKIE,YOU HAVE ONE OF TWO THINGS GOING ON EITHER A CRANKSENSOR GOING OUT OR A FUEL PUMP.LET,S GO BACK AND RE DO THE PUMP TEST.TURN KEY ON PUMP SHOULD RUN FOR 3 SEC.S NOW PUMP WILL NOT CYCLE UNTIL YOU CRANK ENG IT KICKS ON ONE TIME TO PRESSUREIZE FUEL SYSTEM BUT UNTIL IT IS CRANKED THE SYSTEM STAYS PRESSUREIZED.SO TURN KEY ON YOU SHOULD HEAR PUMP NOW BUMP STARTER PUMP SHOULD BE ON AGAIN.BUT JUST BECAUSE IT RUNS DON,T MEAN IT PUMPS FUEL.CYCLE THE KEY 5 TIMES ON AND OFF.WILL CAR TRY AND START.IF YES PUMP PROB IF NO CRANK SENSOR.UNDERSTAND I CAN,T GIVE YOU A ACCURATE DIAG.BUT CAN ONLY GIVE YOU HELP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION.PLEASE FEEL FREE TO ASK ANYTHING ELSE YOU NEED.PLEASE TAKE A MIN TO RATE MY HELP TY BILLYMAC

Another Question for Billymac:
I tested the pump as you indicated above. When I turned key on and off 5 times (not starting the car) I heard a thump at the rear of the car, while in the on position. Is that how the pump works/sounds? Yes the car started.
So it is probably the fuel pump, correct?

Answer
hi vickie.and very sorry to hear the fuel pump was unsucessful.but this is usually how things go.the cranksensor is a little more difficult.it is located on the bottom of the engine in front of eng behind the pulley that drives your alt and accesories.this is held on bye a big bolt.now this bolt has 175 pounds of torque.you cannot get it loose without a impact.if you are going to change it and do not have an impact avail take it to a service station and ask them to loosen the bolt and then hand tighten it to get you back home.the sensor is held on bye 2 bolts.simple enough to get off.however there is little metal thin rings on back of the pulley that are actually fireing rings .you must be very careful removeing and installing the pulley not to damage these rings or it will damage your new sensor.good luck vickie billymac
