I have a 1997 Olds LS.3.8 Eng.This started about 3 weeks ago. My wife was just driving along when the car started to just not going when she give it the gas and the power windows quit working at the same time. We had it towed to a Buick dealer they call the first time and said that the Mass Air Flow Sensor was bad . Then they called and said that the Fuel Pump was bad . So thay put the the fuel pump on . Then thay said the Mass Air was ok.When we went to pick it up the windows still did not work.  They said they didn't do anything to the windows.  The power window and seat started working, the car was working fine after, now if you try to roll the window down with motor running it will kill the motor. The windows work one day and the next day they don't and that is when the problems begin.

hi freddy.well i would have to say,you have an alternator prob.low voltage.and you are saying no way my battery stays charged.well an average alt puts out either 63 amps or 100 amps.power windows and seats pull more amps then anything in your car.your car starts on your battery then the battery goes to sleep ,and the alternator is left to run all the electric in the car.as an alt begins too go badit slowly produces les and less amps.for instance a 100 amp alt may be chargeing but only putting out 40 amps or so.the eng will run on that amount but when you push the pwr wndw or the seat you take half that voltage from the eng the fuel injection needs a min of 40m amps to operate.so have a chargeing system test done at a reputable service cntr and ask them to do the test with everything you can turn on working either alt or batt is bad.good luck and please take a min of your time to rate my help ty billymac.          Ok I toke the car to advance auto and thay saide that the alternator was putting out a -3 amps so i bought one and i still have the same problem. even if the car isn't running if you try to roll the windows it still kills the motor if it is running . and if you try to roll the window down and it is not running it pulls the interiar lights down . Can it be a ground problum and if so where would the grounds be at under the dash? Thanks.

Answer
freddy .well you are not saying if one window or all.the alt putting out 3 amps was certainly a big prob.and low voltage will cause a lot of electrical malfuntions.is the seat switch and the windows on the same control switch if so i would suspect the master switch.write back and let me know if all switches do this or just the master.remove that switch for the windows look at the backside are there contacts touching.it really sounds like you have a power and ground on that switch contacting each other if so this could have burned your alt out.this system runs on a circuit breaker so it would work sometimes.and not others.  billy mac
