my brake light is on and will not turn off when i release the emergency brakes. i'm really confused could you please help me. thanks

Hi Liz,
Thare is a switch on the parking brake lever that possibly could be out of adjustment.
But more likely that you need some brake work.
There is a switch in the brake line system to light that light if there is a difference in pressure between the front and rear brakes. It is possible that air got into the system, or there is a leak, or the master cylinder has a problem.
Depending on how fancy the car is, you could have wear indicators that turn the light on, and newer ones have wheel speed sensors that can turn it on if one has a problem.
There is even a time when the light will come on if the stop light in the rear window blows a bulb, but the last three things are mostly later than 1985.
I think you might want a brake shop to take a look at that very important safety system.
