Plymouth Repair: Problem with 1989 Plymouth Grand Vougler 3.0 engine, head gasket, head gaskets

Question
I just had a transmission put in the van.  I had only driven it about 10 miles, when white/gray smoke came from the exsalt piper and could smell anti-freeze.  My father said it was the head gasket.  Would putting in the better transmission
caused the extra strain on the motor. I have 187,ooo miles on the van. Is it worth fixing?  I am a single mom and can not afford a car payment.
Thank you for your time.
