Pontiac Repair: Codes PO600 and P1601, ac delco, gm dealer

QUESTION: I have a 1996 pontiac grand am with a 2.4L. Yesterday at gas station fill car with gas and went to leave and car run for a minute or two and then shutoff and would not restart. Let car sit for a bit and car started and ran fine all day. Went to start car this morning and it would not start. Checked the fuel pump it was running. Car just cranked and would not start. Hooked code reader to car and got code PO600 and there was a historic code of P1601. After reading codes tried to start again and it started and ran. Looking for ideas on what the problem could be.

ANSWER: Hi Joshua:

both of those codes are internal ECM (engine computer) codes. as long as youy have good power/ignition power and grounds to the ecm there is nothing extral that will cause those codes to set vesides a bad ecm. BUT like I just said if you have a high resistance issue in any of those feed to the ecm all bets are off. a engine computer is like a home Pc garbage in you get garbage out.  so as long at the wiring is good to the ecm the only thing it can be is a bad engine computer. That has to be programmed at an AC delco repair shop or at a GM dealer. good luck :-)

QUESTION: Ok this car had a bad water leak that I repaired but did not dry out the inside. The carpet in the car is still damp do you think that it is possible that the moisture in the car maybe got into the ecm? Also is the ecm located behind the glovebox in this car?

Yes if the water leak was up near the cowl area or the windshield. One other note on these cars if the carpet get really wet the Airbag module is under the carpet on the right side of the car under the r/f seat I have seen these car have the air bags deploy due to water into the air bad module. Not a good situation!
