Pontiac Repair: Engine light/Electric fan, coolant temp, electric fan

Question
Todd, I wanted to take one more whack at this because I didnt give complete info before. While driving, engine light came on, engine began to run rough. I noticed after a couple days parked, that when I turn the key to "on" the electric fan is running, in which case the engine barely wants to run. Other times the fan is not on when starting and it runs fine. I was able to keep the car running a couple of times while fan was on, when the fan shut off, the engine went right back to purring like a kitten. All this took place with everything off, ac, heat etc. At no time did I see the AC comp kick in. I replaced the coolant temp sensor, with no favorable results. Scratching my head here. Thanks for looking again.

Answer
from what you just described to me it may have a bad engine control module (ECM) you also said it will not flash codes too correct? if for some reason the engine control module is in some sort of a failed state it will ground all the solenoids and relays and that is why the fan is running? With out seeing it I can't tell you for sure. there has to be a parts store around you that has a code reader for an OBD car. I know there are far and few between everything from 1996 and up is OBD II.
