Pontiac Repair: 96 grand prix 3.1, coolant temp, spark plug wire

Question
QUESTION: I had my car checked at auto zone and all these codes showed up any suggestions on how to fix it without spending alot of money  po118,0401,0341,0300,0171 I can do the work myself I just don't kno wat I need to do any help will be greatfully helpful

ANSWER: Hi Hardy:

the codes are all over the board here. the 188 is for a coolant temp sensor. the 401 is for an egr valve issue. the 341 is for a cam position sensor. the 300 is a misfire code. the 171 is a lean condition. I don't know where to tell you to start with this first. I would have the codes cleared at the auto parts store and drive it untill the light comes on again and see what code(S) come back first. and go from there. all of these codes are intertwined where one could cause an issue for the other. all of the parts I mentioned other then the cam sensor are pretty easy to replace. as for the lean code and the misfire you could have a vacuum leak a dirty set of injetors a bad spark plug wire it goes on and on. with out seeing it I can't tell you for sure. good luck :-)

QUESTION: I have replaced the cam position sensor like 2 weeks ago could it of been a bad part since it's showing up again

Answer
anything is possible especially if the part was aftermarket (non original equipment). I think I would look more at a wiring issue for that code if that came back again. What you really need is a scan tool not a code reader. that way you can see if the sensor is working or not.
