Pontiac Repair: 2003 grand am wont start, compression tester, smell gas

Question
I have a 2003 grand am 2.2 and it just all of a sudden wil not start. It cranks fast but wont catch. I don't smell gas and the spark plugs were all white and brown. Replaced the plugs but that's it so far. Cans also hear the fuel pump turn on. Any idea?

Answer
Hi Heather:
If it cranks over fast or it sounds strange cranking over that is not a good sign. It could be that the timing chain either jumped or broke. Either way that is NOT a good thing. I would do a compression test on the car. you can rent a compression tester at the parts store for cheap/cheap and see what you have for compression on all 4 cylinders they should all be the same I would say somewhere between 140-160 PSi Not sure what the real spec is off the top of my head but they should be with in 10% from highest to lowest. I would start there.
Good Luck :-)
