Pontiac Repair: fluid, power steering fluid, gm dealership

Question
Todd

I have a question about fluids. I just had the power hose to the power steering changed. The reservoir has new fluid in it, but it is brown and does not match the color of the new oil.  Is it normal for the new fluid to turn brown as a result of the reservour being dirty?   Is it possible that the wrong fluid was added?

Also, I can hear my auto humming,  and when I move the steering wheel, it sounds as if it is low on fluid, but it is not.  What could be causing this noise?

Thanks,
Pat

Answer
Hi Pat:

as Power steering fluid gets old it turns brown in color from the heat not really a big issue. You can use cold climate P/S fluid it some times cause noise to be less. you can change it your self if you have an old turkey baster suck out as much fluid as you can refill the pump start the car turn the wheel from left to right fully a few times and repeat the drain and refill until the fluid looks clean. you can get the cold climate fluid at any GM dealership it is expensive for a qt. as for the noise if there is air in the system it will make noise as you change the fluid you may purge the air out and the noise may go away. The cold climate fluid will also be less likely to aerate.
