Pontiac Repair: P0440, pontiac montana, vent valve

Question
QUESTION: I replaced the gas cap and checked the vent solenoid to see if it was functioning and it was. I don't have a smoke tester to check the EVAP. What other options due i have without taking it to a dealership?

ANSWER: Hi there:

What model and year is this car? evap codes are hard to find the root cause of even when you have a smoke tester. You could have a bad gas cap, teank pressure sensor or even a bad evap valve. Just because you have power and ground to the vent valve doesn't mean it's sealing.

QUESTION: It is a 1999 Pontiac Montana. I replaced the gas cap and the light still came on. I've bought a new Purge Solenoid, a new Vent Solenoid, and a new Vapor Canister from Autozone for around $160. I figured it is cheaper than going out and purchasing a smoke tester. Hopefully this solves the problem.

Answer
Do you live in the rust belt? If so chnace are it needs the fule filler pipe. The top of the pipe rots out and on some of them there is a plastic coating on the top of the pipe the plastic get bloated from the rust under it and will sometime actually crack causing the leak. Take a long hard look at the pipe where it seals to the gas cap. good luck :-)
