Pontiac Repair: 2007 Grand Prix right side cv shaft, cv shaft, pontiac grand prix

Question
Hi, I am having trouble removing the right side cv shaft from base model Pontiac Grand Prix, 2007 3.8 liter. Mine has a retaining ring inside the transaxle to hold the inner CV joint in position. Directions state to remove retaining bolt and separate speedometer pinion from transaxle housing. Drain differential and remove differential cover to gain access to this retaining ring. I see no diff cover and seem to be unable to remove the speedo pinion. Am I missing something?

Answer
Hi clint:

in order to remove the cv joint all you really need is a big try bar . wedge it in between the extension housong and the back of the cv joint and pry the joint out of the trnamission. Be careful not to damage the seal. if it will not come out then try renting a cv joint remover it's a slide hammer tool with a fork that hooks behind the cv joint to jar it and allow the joint to come out. a lot of the big box auto parts stores rent this tool. as for the speedo tone right it is inside the transmission on the final drive. after you take the 4 bolts off the extension housing the speedo tine ring is right there. I don't know why you would need to replace that they don't go bad. If the root of you issue here is a speedo problem you need to look elsewhere I have never ever seen one of those go bad!
