Pontiac Repair: power steering 2005 pontiac g6, 2005 pontiac g6, ac delco

Question
Hello...i have a 2005 pontiac g6. 6cylinder and the info deck is flashing saying power steering. the issue is that it doesn't happen everytime you start it and drive. but when it does happen it acts as though the power steering is out...very hard to steer. i was told thatthere is no power steering pump on the vehicle, that it is electric on this model. does this mean there is an electrical issue ? i was told that there is a motor under the dash that controls the peer steering and that perhaps it needs replaced. this just started yesterday after i had the rack and pinion replaced which seems to be fine. before i replaced the rack it was hard to steer one way and easy the other way but the electrical system on the car would not allow you to drive it in that condition..it shut the car off. the fact that i can drive the car now leads me to believe that the rack is fine. the weird thing is right after rack replacement i took car to get allignment. as soon as they pulled it off the rack the powersteering issue i explained above started happening. could there be some electrical reset that needs to be done after a rack replacement?
thank you for your time ...Beth :)

Answer
Hi beth:

It can be something as simple as the powersteering control module needs to be recalibarted to the "center" position that is done with A GM scan tool and can only be done at a dealer or a AC delco repair shop that has the poper scan too with the right software to do this. The other thing could be that the steering column is bad. there are 2 sensors in it and if either of them acts up it will turn on the lamp and they are not serviceable the complete column needs to be replaced. there is a special service policy for those cars this is the Policy #10183 it covers the steering column for 10 years or 100,000 miles BUT your car had to fit in to a certain VIN break point. Hope that helps. Good luck :-)
