Pontiac Repair: Fuel pump 05 sun fire, rubber mallet, fuel pump

Question
How do I tell if the fuel pump is failing? And can I replace it myself? How long at shop to be repaired?

Answer
Hi Penny:

What is the problem with the car that you think it needs a fuel pump? The pump is inside the tanks so it's not a job you can do your self at home. I would say the labor to replace the pump woould be about 2.5 hours at what ever the shop rate is where you take it to get repaired. If indeed it is a fuel pump issue replace the filter as well! You can turn the key to run while someone listens for the pump to run put your era at the filler pipe and see if you hear it "BUZZ" for about 2-3 seconds when the key is turned to run. if you don't hera the pump run you can use a rubber mallet and tap on the bottom of the gast tank while somone cranks the car that sometimes will jar a bad pump just enough to get it running again. good luck :-}
