Pontiac Repair: Vehicle speed sensor, vehicle speed sensor, pontiac aztek

Question
QUESTION: I have a 2001 Pontiac Aztek.  My speedometer needle started jumping up and down for a couple days then quit completely.  How do I check the speed sensors and wiring?  I can't seem to find out where they are located.  Thanks for your help.

ANSWER: Hi Monique:

chances are it's it the speedo head it's self and not the spped sensor. if the transmission is shifting fine that there is not an issue with the speed sensor. The engine computer needs that sensor for up shifts in the transmission. Also if the cruise control still works there issue for sure is not a speed sensor and more then likley an issue with the speedo head it's self. we do not repair them at the dealer  we order exchnage repaired units so they have the correct milage on them. getting one froma junk yard is not really an option. So your stuck ordering one though the dealer. To anser your speed sensor question it's inside the trasnmission on the right side of the car. good luck :-)

Answer
your welcome. the speeds sensore has 2 wires comming out of the top of it. If your having more issues then just the speedo as stated it could have some sort of Rodent damage to the wires I have see that happen more then once. they seem to like to chew on wires. Take a look at the wires doing to the sensor anywher that the wires are exposed by the transmission.
