Pontiac Repair: 96 Grand Am wont start., dash board, fuel control

Question
Hello,

I turn the key, dash board lights up but there's no crank whatsoever. Battery read out at 12.2v. Theft light stays on and doesn't blink. I'd like to bypass the theft system, but everything I've read says that the car has to be running to do that. But I can't get it to start.

Do you think it's a problem w/ the anti theft system?

Could you tell me how to disable it?

Thanks.

Answer
Hi steve:
It's hard to say without seeing it. BUT a read common issue with these is the theft system cuts out fuel control to teh engine. usually the ignition lock housing is the culprit. if you Bypassed the housing you need the car to learn the value of the bypass resistor you put in. to do this crank the car over and then leave the key in the run position. turn off all the accesories so the battery doesn't die. let it sit for 10 minutes the security lamp will either flash and or stay on steady for that time period then go out. after 10 minutes then turn the key off let it sit 1 minute then try to start the car it should have learned your bypass. If it still will not start you have something else going on.
good luck :-}
