Pontiac Repair: Accelerator Cable, accelerator cable, accelerator pedal


Question
I have a 1998 Pontiac Montana (Transport) and need to replace the accelerator cable. I need a step by step instruction on how to do this. Would you be willing to share your knowledge with me on how to do this?

This is right out of the service manual.
Accelerator Control Cable Replacement
Removal Procedure


         
         

1.  Remove the left instrument panel sound insulator. Refer to Instrument Panel Insulator Panel Replacement - Left Side in Instrument Panel, Gauges, and Console..

2.  Remove the fuel injection sight shield. Refer to Fuel Injector Sight Shield Replacement in engine mechanical.

3.  Disconnect the accelerator cable from the accelerator pedal.

4.  Squeeze the accelerator cable cover tangs and push the accelerator cable through the bulkhead.


         
         

1.  Remove the accelerator cable shield, if equipped.

2.  Disconnect the accelerator cable from the retaining clip.

3.  Disconnect the accelerator cable from the throttle body lever.

4.  Disconnect the accelerator cable from the accelerator cable bracket.


         
         

1.  Remove the accelerator cable from the vehicle. Note the cable routing for aid in installation.

Installation Procedure


         
         
Notice: Do not route flexible components (hoses, wires, conduits, etc.) within 50 mm (2 in) of moving parts unless flexible components can be securely fastened. This is necessary in order to prevent possible interference and damage to the component.


1.  Install accelerator cable into car using routing noted during removal.


         
         

1.  Install the snap retainer through the bulkhead.

2.  Connect the accelerator cable through the slot in the accelerator pedal lever.

3.  Seat the snap retainer in the accelerator pedal lever.


         
         

1.  Connect the accelerator cable to the throttle body lever.

2.  Connect the accelerator cable to the accelerator cable bracket.

3.  Connect the accelerator cable into the retaining clip.

4.  Reinstall the accelerator cable shield, if equipped.

5.  Inspect and check for complete throttle opening and closing positions by operating the accelerator pedal. Also check for poor carpet fit under the accelerator pedal.

6.  Reinstall the left instrument panel sound insulator. Refer to

 Instrument Panel Insulator Panel Replacement - Left Side in Instrument Panel, Gauges, and Console.

7.  Reinstall the fuel injection sight shield. Refer to Fuel Injector Sight Shield Replacement in engine mechanical.
