Pontiac Repair: Pontiac Grand Am stalling while driving, jumper cables, starter solenoid

Question
Dear nice Todd Puccio , We have a 2003 Pontiac Grand Am GT Ram Air , 6-cylinder .  The

engine is stalling while driving .  The starter motor

turns , only with the car connected to another car

with jumper cables .  But when the starter motor turns

, the engine does not start .  Would it be wise to do

a home tune-up and charge the battery , or could there

be other causes of this problem ?  Would it be good to

get a professional diagnostic test , before we spend

money on tune-up parts and a battery charger ?  Please have a nice day !  Thank you .  John , Kankakee , IL 60901

Answer
Hey John;

well the stalling issue can be any # of things. when is stalls it will not Crank? when it stalls out doe you loose everying in the car radio blower motor etc??? When it stalls out does it spit sputter and stall or is it like someone just turned the key off. When you try to crank it do You hear the starter spin out but it doesn't crank the engine? If that is the case the starter bendix or the starter solenoid is bad. Replace it as a complete assembly starter and solenoid. Does this have the original battery in it? if so replace it. You could have a bad connectin between the battery and cables and that could cause issues as well. The side post batteries are noted for leaking acid out onto the cables. It may be worth a look take the cbales off and make sure there is no corrosion between the cables and battery. On that car the battery leaks onto the (-) battery connection to the body under the battery tray if that connection is corroded it will cause all kinds of starge issues... That is where I would start looking. Good luck :)
