Pontiac Repair: 95 Grand Am, crankshaft sensor, car leaks

Question
95 Grand Am Quad 4-5 speed- 207,000 miles-great running car up till now-one owner-me. Car started cutting out while at speed. I put a new crankshaft sensor and ignition switch and it ran great again for 300 miles. Then it rained and it acted up again-missing and stalling. It seems like it runs great if the weather is fine but a damp morning or rain it acts crazy. One morning after 10 miles of interstate driving it missed and almost cut off about ten times the check engine light and temp light came on each time. I drove it home and it was fine. I replaced the temp sensor but still acting up. I've read your advice about this car and I checked and cleaned the small wires where the engine bolts to tranny. The car leaks water in the interior. Could something be getting damp inside? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated Thanks

Answer
Hey David:

well if it leaks water on the inside that is not good especially if it's #1 leaking on the right side near the glove box because the engine computer is over on that side of the car and #2 if it leaks bad enough and the padding under the carpet get soaked bad enough I have seen the air bag deploy on these cars all by them selfs due to water in to the air bag module which is under the carpet on the right side of the car. Now back to the running problem If the computer for the engine is not getting wet then I would look at an ignition system issue withere the connectors between the spark plugs and the coil housing or the coil housing it's self is bad and the damp weather is making it more apt to misfire. Both of those things are very common on that engine. you can use a spray bottole of water and spary down the coil cover and see if the enegine starts to misfire if so you found it.. spray awound under the cover on the back side of the engine near the power steering pump up un der the cover do it when the engine nis hot so the water vaporizes batter and gets the coil housing very damp from the steam.. Good luck :)
