QUESTION: it is a 98 pontiac sunfire, 2.2 automatic

Answer
Hi Brian:

Well if this happens every ignition cycle it should be pretty easy to find right? Maybe not.. You seem pretty mechanically inclined. What I would do is this double check all your ground connections especially the ones under the battery tray on that car. the ground cable has a seperate ground that goes to the body. Make sure that connection is clean and tight. Next thing to check is with a Digital volt meter check all the fuses under the hood and in the left side of the dash fuse box. they should have the same volatge at the battery with in approx .050 volt. If you have far less then battery voltage you have a high resistance issue somewhere. The most likley cause would be a bad set of contacts in the ignition switch. If you want to go further you can check the grounds inside the car. there are a couple of ground connections on the dash board carrier on either side of the steering column. if you still don'r find anything it may be an internal fault in either the IPC or the ABS module not that likley but it can happen. most of the time issue like this are a bad connection somewhere. Good luck  :-}
