Pontiac Repair: Shuts off while driving, pontiac bonneville ssei, 2000 pontiac bonneville ssei

Question
I have a 2000 Pontiac Bonneville SSEI...that shuts off while driving.....have replaced the lifters, Fuel Injectors, Alternator, Battery, Water Pump, Fuel Control Regulator, Fuel Pump, Harmonic Balancer  all to no avail.  There is no rhyme or reason to when it shuts off and sometimes will go for days and not do it.  Usually will re-start immediately...sometimes it takes 3-4 minutes but eventually does start...We are at a loss any ideas?

Answer
Hi June:

there are a few things it could be. #1 would be the crank shaft position sensor. VERY common on that engine. #2 a Mass air flow sensor. does it just shut off like someone turned the key off or does it spit stutter and buck bbefore it dies out? If it's just like the key was turned off I would venture to say it's a crank sensor. if it sputters and then stalls I would suspect a MAF sensor. good luck :)
