Pontiac Repair: 1996 pontiac grand am engine codes, chevron techron fuel system, chevron techron fuel system cleaner

Question
My check engine light came on and I got the following codes: p0108, p1171, p0300. The dealership recommended further diagnostics at $98/hr. What do you think?

Answer
Hi steve:

the codes are for misfire,MAP sensor, lean exhaust. these can be cause by a vacuum leak or a bad map sensor. with out the aid of a true scan tool there is not way to tell for sure what the issue is here. A split vacuum line could cause this. you can spray carb cleaner around the top of the engine and see if the engine idle changes if so you have a vacuum leak and thatcould cause your issue. It could be a bad MAP sensor and it is skewing the fuel trim delivery into the engine the wrong way. just a few Ideas with out seeing it it's hard to say for sure. You could have a bad set of plug wire on thatengine the plug wires tend to go bad at the ignition coils that could be the misfire code OR dirty fuel injetors. try a product called Chevron Techron fuel system cleaner You can get it at any cars parts store or at WAL*MART. good luck :-}
