Pontiac Repair: 2007 Montana sv6, montana sv6, powertrain warranty

Question
QUESTION: My 2007 Montana is making a grinding sound when I step on the accelarator.  sounds like transmission problem but it only happens when I am on drive.  When I do manual change of gears, it doesn't happen.
Can somebody please tell me as to what is the problem? Is it transmission or something else?

ANSWER: Hi Rick:

can you discribe it better? and if you Manually upshift the Van it doesn't make this noise but if you have it just in "D" it makes a noise when ever the van is moving? how about reverse? It doesn't make much sence that it's not ther when you manually up shift. It should be there then as well. the noise is not there when the van is in park and the engine is running?

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: No not whenever the van is moving, the sound is only heard for a split second before moving forward. Ok ok ok, sounds like the gear is not engaging or it is slipping, hesitating. But only when I am on "D".  when I downshift to 1st gear manually, it's ok, no gring sounds.  Same on reverse, no problem.

Answer
one last question when you have it in "D" and it up shifts by it's self does the nose continue though al 4 gears or does it goe away in some of them? My guess is it has either a bearing or a gear set in the transmission that is going bad. It is going to have to come apart no matter what and it will get expensive BUT a 2007 Van had 5/100,000 powertrain warranty. So it may be covered if it's less then 100,000 miles You could be right in the fringe of 5 years old....
