Pontiac Repair: 3.8 ltr pontiac shuts off, pontiac boneville, fuel pressure regulator

Question
1995 pontiac boneville w/3.8 ltr.the car will just shut off while driving and at first would start right back up. replaced the fuel filter then the fuel pump then the ignition control module and it seems to be better but it still dies and i can hold it to the floor and it seems to help it start back. should i replace the cam sensor and or crank sensor and is there any way to test these sensors .   thank you for your time

Answer
Hi Bill:

it can be a bunch of things that engine has known "phantom stall" issues. the most likely cause is the crank position sensor. a cam sensor will not make it stall. the problem is you can test is but if the car will run the test will show the sensor is good. It needs a hard failure where it will not restart. if it happens after the car has been running for a while and is good and hot an up to tempature chances are it's an electrical failure like that sensor. Another thing to look at is the fuel pressure regulator. the diaprams go bad in them and they start to leak fuel into the vacuum hose. with the engine running pull the hose off the regulator with the engine runnin and leave it off for a few minutes there should be no raw fuel coming out of where the vacuum hose attaches if so the regulator is bad. One last thing if you replace the crank sensor use only an orignal equipment sensor from the dealer. aftermarket electrical sensors cause more issues then they fix. good luck :)
