Pontiac Repair: oil pump!, wheel bearing grease, shaft bearings

Question
howo u replace oil pump on a 2000 Pontiac bonneville ssei?

Answer
Hi there:

well first off oil pumps don't go bad on these engines. chances are the engine is worn out it you have low oil pressure. But to answer your question you need to remove the oil pan and take the front timing cover off the engine. the oil pump is in the timing cover. the pump doesn't go bad the timing cover usually wears out due to lack of oil changes and the oil be sludged up or the engine was ran low on oil ansd straved the pump. The pump is 2 metal gears in an aluminum front timing cover. When I say the engine is worn out I mean the bearings. This engine if it has low oil pressure wears out the cam chaft bearing in a hurry. So just replacing main and rod bearings is just a bad aid The engine should be pulled and stripped downand have the cam shaft bearings replaced in the block as well. Good luck :)

Oh if for some reason you opt to try to change the pump only when you replace the pump pack the gears full of wheel bearing grease. That will prime the pump.
