Pontiac Repair: firebird over heating, tree pollen, head gasket

Question
I have a 1994 v-6 firebird that over heats in normal driving in town. I have replaced hoses, taken out thermostat, replaced radiator, I have circulation from water pump from what I can see. I have replaced cooling fan and actually have it running when I start the car to ensure it is running. I have no answer and have noticed alot of issues with over heating on line with others as well. Please help ASAP. This is my wife's car and she needs it everyday because I have been disabled from an auto wreck.

Answer
Hi mike:

well a few things to look at . is the air dam still in tact under the bumper? that directs the air into the radiator instead of going under the car. is the a/c condenser plugged up with dirt and tree pollen "fuzzies" does the cooling fan come on whne the engine over heats? does the fan come on when you have the a/c on assuming that the a/c still works. if the a/c works and it's warm out after a minute or so the fan should come on due to hi a/c working pressure. if not I would look at a fan control condition. do you know in fact that it is overheating? or is the gauge reading wrong? how about the pressure cap on the radiator if that will not allow pressure to build it will boil over not necessarily over heat. another issue I have seen it once or twice an aftermarket cooling fan motor and the fan turns in the wrong direction. When the fan is on you should feel the air blowing back onto the engine meaning it's drawing the air though the radiator. Lsatly there is a chemical that you can add to the antifreeze and if there are hydrocarbons mixed in the additive will change color to indicate a head gasket issue. Either a NAPA or Carquest store should have that. good luck :)
