Pontiac Repair: Replacing alternator 92 Bonneville SSE, belt tensioner, junk yard

Question
I bought a used alternator from the local "junk" yard and would like to know the best way to clean it up before installing it.
Can I use engine cleaner? The man that sold it to me said that it would clean up good after I put the belt on and told me to use a ratchet to pull it forward to tighten the belt.

Answer
Hi Sharon;

don't bother cleanit it off other then with a rag. Do not use any kind of water or cleaner on it. The belt tensioner need either a wrench or a ratchet what ever you have with a long handle on it for leverage to unload the tension so you can slip it on over the pulley. good luck :-}
