Pontiac Repair: Fuel pump, chev cavalier, pontiac sunfire

Question
Harold...My daughter's 1996 Pontiac Sunfire has a bad fuel pump in the fuel tank. Can you give me any info on how to replace and do other models fit...i.e. chev cavalier.
dealers want   $850-950 to replace. and she is short on funds. Wants to stay below 500.00. Any advice you can give to help me install it would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

p.s.   what are your feelings on replacing complete tank and all from used auto part yard?

Answer
Remove the filler neck hoses, unplug the electrical connector, disconnect the fuel lines. Remove the tank strap bolts, and remove the tank. Turn the retaining ring on the sending unit counterclockwise, pull the pump and sending unit outof the tank.
I believe that the pump and sending unit come as an assembly on this one and that is why the price is so high.
I do not recommend using any electrical fuel system parts from the junk yard because as they sit around, the varnish on the wires inside the pump deteriorates and then short out. Same thing with fuel injectors.
Have you priced a pump at the local parts stores? NAPA, Auto Zone, etc.
