Pontiac Repair: key in ignition, pontiac grand am, lock smith

Question
I have a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am SE 2.4l. The key is hard to turn in the ignition and after a couple minutes of jiggling the key, it will finally turn and start the car. Do I need a new key from the dealer or an ignition switch? Thanks

Answer
Hi Tony:
most of the time the issue with the ignition lock cylinder it's self or a very worn key. very rarely is the igniton switch it's slef the cause. The lock cylinder the tumblers bind in the cylinder and that is why it will not turn. A good lock smith can fix it or the dealer. Good luck :)

P.S. If you suspect that it's a key issue get one cut from the dealer that is cut from the mater code for your car that it came from the factory with. If you go to the hardware store and they cut a key they trace your old key and you will then have 2 bad keys. one from the delaer is cut to the original depths not worn out depths.
