Pontiac Repair: power steering fluild, major oil companies, wetaher

Question
good morning todd
I talk to you a few time in the past and u been very help full.
I have 91 sunbird 4L. going to flush out power steering fluid.
but most the bottles out there say for new or modern cars.
Question is , is that stuff synthetic. and since the car didnt
come with synthetic. what would be the best type or brand to
replace it with?  that u Again  Steve

Answer
The GM stuff called "cold climate" is a synthetic blend of some sort it flows better in cold wetaher. that is safe to use in any older car. just be aware that is you have any small leak in the system now with a synthetic oil it's going to be more of a leak now. the stuff is thinner then old fashion fluid. I would look for a non synthetic fluid Catrol makes one as do most of the major oil companies.. The only thing I would tell you NOT to use is transmission fluid. That is for use in a Ford product or VERY new GM products.
