Pontiac Repair: 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix, pontiac grand prix, floor shift

Question
I could not remove the key from my ignition.  I found a way to remove the key from the ignition from the internet by inserting a screwdriver inside the hole underneath the steering column to manually release the ignition lock solenoid.  Should I replace the ignition lock cylinder or could it something else that is causing the problem.  If it is the ignition lock cylinder, is it hard to replace?

Thank you for your assistance

Answer
Hi Stephen:
is this a colum shift car or a floor shift car. The key will not come out or the key will not rotate back to the off position fully? My guess it is will not rotate back to the off position al the way. If that is the case and this is a floor shift car I would suspect that either tye shifter it's self is bad or one or more wires are broken off the connector that plugs into the shifter. Most of the time it's a broken wire take the top off the center console and you can see the connector right at the base of the shifter. if it has no broken wires it's the shfter that os more then likley bad. good luck :)
