Pontiac Repair: 92 Pontiac Bonneville, auto part store, pontiac bonneville

Hi I own a 92 Pontiac Bonneville with 270, 000 +miles on it. It started given me problems on Sat am.  I drove it and it cranked up fine, I made a stop and came back out and it cranked up fine and as i was puttin it in drive it cut off.  I tried cranking it but it wouldnt start, I put gas in it as it was low and no go.  I got a jump and drove it to an auto part store , where they told me it was a bad battery after testing it.  I then replaced the battery and the next day it happened again this time it cut off on me as I was in traffic and it would try and turn over without success, I had it towed back to my apt.  I didnt bother it on Mon but this morning when I tried it, it cranked right up but I am scared to drive it.  What could the problem be?

with this many miles on it it could be just about anythging! when it dies out what does it do when it cuts out? does it just shut off like someone turned off the key or does it spti sputter and cough thern die? That could be a clue as to what happened. did it die out when it was good and hot up to opertaing temp or was it still cold?
