Pontiac Repair: 1996 Pontiac Grand Am Lights, auto lamps, head lamps

Question
I have a 96 Grand Am and it starts but when I let down the emergency brake the dash lights and headlights won't come on the smaller lights in the front come on but not the main lights or dash. I checked the fuses and they are all fine. Do you have any answers for me?

Answer
Hi Haillie:

will the lamps come on if you turn them on manually with the switch on the dash? If so there is an issue with the auto head lamps on this car. it can be a lot of things like a Ambinet lamp sensor or a head lamp relay. The insterment cluster (speedo) is the module that controls the auto lamps to come on. that controls a relay for the auto lamps. The auto lamps relay is located in the front of the car behind the front bumper that relay could be bad or if you live in the rust belt like I do there could be an issue with the wiring to the relay being corroded. It seems like a pretty simple system but it's quite complex and that are a lot of parts involved so there is not just one Thing I can say could be your issue. Good luck :)
