Pontiac Repair: 96 sunfire auto trans problem, throttle valve, trans fluid

Question
I have a 1996 sunfire 2.2L auto transmission, it recently started refusing to shift out of 2nd gear, feeling like it's in neutral, i checked Trans fluid and it was low so i topped it up but nothing changed, the fluid was a little browned but still pretty red. i guess what I'm trying to ask is do i need a new transmission? or can i do something to save that one?

Answer
Hey T.J.

I'm really not a transmission guys as stated in my BIO but I can try to help you out. I'll assume this has a 3 speed transmission? if so in order for it to up shift it needs the TV input wich is throttle valve that is controled by a cable attached to the throttle body that could have jumped out of adjustment but it's not something you can do on your own or it needs govener pressure does the speedo still work? of so the govener is spinning but it could be stuck again that is not a do it your self job. I wouldn't think this needs an over haul I'll assume when you say it will not shift out of 2'nd it doesn't just netural out and thr engine rpm's peg and then it will not move but rather it just hangs up in 2nd gear the rpm's go up but it will not up shift to 3'rd.. Good luck :)
