Pontiac Repair: 97 Grand Prix GT erratic engine temperature, radator, gm dealer

Question
I have owned this Grand Prix since it was new.  When new the engine temperature always remained steady at about 175 degrees.  The last few years the engine temperature has become erratic fluctuating between 175 to 210 degrees.  I recently had the cooling system pressure checked and had the water pump, two elbows, and the thermostat replaced by a GM dealer.  The engine temperature is more erratic now.  The two cooling fans come on at about 210 and run until it cools back to 175 degrees.  I would like to see the temperature run steady again at 175 degrees.  What can cause this?

Answer
Hi Terry:

well the fans on these cars turn on at higher temps to inprove the emission comming out of the tail pipe if you see erratic temp spikes I would suspect the termostat is cycling too fast open and close. That is nothing you can do about the temp running warm because of the temp programmed into the computer to run the fans. I would try another thermostat and I belive these engines are rated at 19% degrees for the thermostat. One other thyen you may want to look at it if you can get a good look in between the radator and the a/c condenser if you look at the right angle you can see the front of the radator and see if ther is a lot of leaves/debris caught inbetween the 2 units if you live in an part of the country that has cotton wood trees that tree pollin gets stuck in the fins of the radtor and the cotton polin acts like a filter and catches all the dir on it and then it blocks the air flow across the radiator. good luck :)
