Pontiac Repair: 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix SE Series 2 3.8L, crank sensor, vacuum problem

Question
Lights on the dash started blinking on and off while slowing
down for a stop light. Later the car started hard and then
ran like a farm tractor sounds (putt, putt) sounded like it
was not getting gas. Smelled hot, but gauges were fine.
Checked oil and stick appeared burned but oil color was
caramel color (recently changed) and hooked up to the
machine and said gas was running lean, problems with a
trottle sensor and so found that there was a vacuum problem
and that was resolved and evened out the rough running; then
started car and stopped to wait for traffic & car died after
lights on the dash flashed off & on and then wouldn't
start. Then would turn over and not start; then when turning
the key sounded like a bug zapper. Didn't hear the fuel pump
hum, so thought not getting gas. Got the fuel relay put in
and bought a gas filter. Got a fuel pump, cause if banged on
the tank, it would start. Now when hooking up the machine;
won't read at all....ERROR....Any ideas? Do you think the
computer fried? Or is it something with the crank sensor.
AUGH!

Answer
Hi Brenda:
Your all over the board here with what's going on.. is there anything else on ths cars that doesn't work? there has to be come kind of common thread here. Like a bad power feed or a bad ground. Which light on the dash were blinking.Warning lights? back lighting or the PRNDL lamps. any warning lights on the dash flashing or blinking? does it crank over or nothing when you turn the key on? if no crank when you turn the key to crank do the lamps in the car dim down turn on the head lamps and try to crank it or the 4 way fashers and see what happens does it crank then or the lamps dim down?
