Pontiac Repair: car overheating, pontiac bonneville, temp gauge

Question
I have a 1989 Pontiac Bonneville 3.8/SE.  I have changed the water pump, the drivebelt, spark plugs, flushed the radiator(clear and replenished coolant).  The car is still running hot and the cooling fans do not come on until the 260 temp gauge. There are two cooling fans and both come on at the same time.  I would appreciate any advice.

Thank you
JW

Answer
Hi Jennider:
does the A?C on the car still work? If so start the car up from sitting cold and turn the a/c on after a minute or 2 the cooling fan(S) should turn on and run. I don't have access to any online service older then 1998. I'm only guessing that this has a low and hi speed fan set up on it usually the fans are different sizes and the smaller fan will come onfirst and then the larger fan when the engine get hotter in conjuction with the smaller fan. So I would suspect that yuou may have a low speed fan relay issue here Again I'm only guessing up against the fire wall ther is a junction block and under the block is a row of relays the coolant fan relays I believe on that car are in that array of relays. you can look at the color of the wires at the fan's and then look for the relays with the same color wire. thatwill indicate which is which I will say ther are 6 or more of them up there. thay all have the same part # you can swap one for another and see if the fan runs at a cooler tem or with the a/c on. Above the relays in the junction bock are a bunch of fuasable links give them a tug and see if any of them are burned up if so replace it. when they burn up they break easily when you tug on them... Usually the temp around when a fan would turn on lo speed is around 225 and when it approached 250 the hi speed(S) run then. sorry I couldn't have been much more help but this is really old school and it's prior to when I started in the business. Good luck :)
