Pontiac Repair: 1992 Pontiac Firebird, pontiac firebird, gauge wires

Question
I have been trying to fix this car for a few months. It's a 1992 Pontiac Firebird with a 3.1L V6 engine. I have jumped the computer and have gotten code 46 off of it, which means the VATS(Vehicle Anti-Theft System) has detected a false key or just mainly, the VATS isnt letting the injectors fire. I have dug around and have finally gave up on digging and would like to know where the actual VATS module is located?

Answer
Hey Justin:

the module for that is behind the dash I belive on the RH side. There is no way to bypass the module It does multiple things depending on the year car and the engine configuration. Some care will not crank. Som will crank but not fire up. Usually the only thing that goes wrong with these systems are a bad chip in the key Did you try both keys? Or the wire harness that runs through the steering column from the ignition lock cyclinder down to the base of the column breaks or freays right at the lock cylinder. on much else goes bad with these. That Is where I would start looking. The only caution here is the steering wheel has an AIR bag in it so I do not recomend youy taking the column aprat your self due to that reason. Other then that the job it pretty straight forward to replace the lock cylinder. If your mechanically inclined try it but other wise I would not give it a try. Another way to see for sure if that is the issue or not is this the wires that run up to the lock cylinder come out at the base of the column and they are 2 very small gauge wires like "phone wire" they are usually in an orange colored jacket put the key in the ignition. unplug the harness the pass key system wires go though and measure what the restinace is through the 2 wires it should not read OL on a digital ohm meter is so there is a break in the wire of the key is bad. You can measure the key as well have someone hold the key for you and then put on lead of the meter on one side of the key pellet and the other lead on the other side of the pellet. what ever the key reads is what you should have at the base of the column with the key in the ignition. give or take .005 Ohms good luck :-}
