Pontiac Repair: crankshaft position sensor, crank shaft position sensor, crankshaft position sensor

Question
Hi Todd  I have a 1993 pontiac transport 3.8 I had an oil leak so I changed the timing cover gasket ,no more leak but the timing seems to be off. it will start but as soon as you put it into gear it stalls.what is the procedure for reinstalling a crank shaft position sensor. Thanks in advance.

Answer
Hi John:

there is no learn procedure for these either the sensor is not sitting on the front cover right there are 2 bolts that hold it on and an alignment dowle on the cover the cenetrs the sensor properly on the cover if it's not centered right on the dowel the fins on the back of the balancer will damage the senor and only that if your lucky I have seenwhere the senor is off a bit and it damages the fins on the balancer if that happens the balancer is junk you can't straighten the fins. If you indeed need a new balancer and or just a sensor get the factory replacement ONLY no aftermarket parts! those parts are critical that aftermarket parts cause more problems then they solve. One last though did you put all the grouns wires back on the engine when you took the cover back on. There is a stud under the ignition module and all the grounds go on that stud make sure none of them twisted off or broke off when you put it back together and they are tight. good luck :)
