Pontiac Repair: Cruise Control Not working, vacuum leak, vacuum lines

Question
Hi Todd, I have a 1994 Olds Silhouette.  The cruise control recently stopped working.  It is weird but once in a while it will start to work for 10 seconds or so and then it stops.  I have looked for any loose or bad wiring and the vacuum lines all look fine.  The Hanes manual mentioned that there is a fuse for it but I can't find it in the fuse box.  I was thinking it could be the switch itself, but I'm not sure.  Do you need to take the steering wheel off to replace it?  Do you have any suggestions on what the problem could be?
Thanks,
Rick

Answer
Hi Rick:

If it works and then quits it's not a fuse. You could have a vacuum leak in one of the lines and when you loose vacuum ot the servo it quits working. Those old system are hard to pin point the problmes some times. there are way to may pieces that can go bad. there is a cruise control module, switch, servo, brake switch X2.on some of thme there is actually a vacuum cut out switch on the brake pedal assemby Not sure when year that was eliminated but look fo that they went bad a lot of times If it's there the one switch has a vacuum hose on it as well and an electrical connector. The second most likley cause is the column switch. it can be replaced with out taking the column aprat it depends on what design it has on design the back of the column behind the t/s switch pops off and it just unplugs right there. the other design the switch wires run down the steering column. that design you can unplug the switch at the base of the column and hoot a small piece of fine wire to the end and tape it real good to the switch harness and make sure the column is not tilted up or down and it's straight that way you can fish the old harness out attach the fish tape to the new switch and then gently fish the new one back through the column and hook it up. Last thing would be the servo being bad nothing else goes bad on these the cruise module rarely goes bad on those old things.. good luck :)
