Pontiac Repair: cooling fan, electric cooling fan, coolant temp

Question
I have a 1996 Grand Am GT w/3.1 V-6. After the engine gets up to temperature, the electric cooling fan does not come on when it should. I have continuity through the fan motor. Is there a relay somewhere that could be bad?

Answer
Hi Jeremy:
Yes there is a relay for the fan it'sne of 1 places either in the under hood jusnction box by the battery or up on the right front strut tower. Look at the color of the wire at the motor and then find the relay that has the same color wire you can check continity between the motor and the relay to rule out a open or high resistance to the motr power feed. Make sure the maxi fuse in the fuse box is not blown. You can try swapping relays around there are multple relays grouped towther and sawp them as long as the part # on the top of them is the same. If it still doesn't work then you either have a bad coolant temp sensor or the engine computer is not controling the coolant fan relay on. with out the aid of a true scan tool ther is no hay to tell if the engine computer is seeing the correct temp and if indeed it's trying to turn on the relay good luck :)
