Pontiac Repair: Service engine light, catalytic converter, joanne

Question
I have a 2004 Pontiac Aztec Rally. I have a check engine light and a service engine light in my car. The Service engine light has lit up. I took the car in for yearly inspection. The car will not pass emissions because 2 lights light up on the emission machine when the mechanic tests it. I had it at the mechanics 3 times in 2 weeks trying to get it to pass emissions. They ruled out catalytic converter. They turn off the light each time. After I use the car for a few days the service light comes on again. Do you have any ideas what the problem might be? Do you have any suggestions what I might have them check?

Answer
Hi Joanne:

what are the code(s) that are setting that keep tripping the lamp on? just turning the light off with out fixing the problem is not the way to go here. until you know what the problem is it's hard to tell you which direction to go in for a fix that engine and transmission may have as many as 75 different codes that can be set and it's impossible to tell you what to do to fix it without knowing what code made the lamp turn on.
