Pontiac Repair: 1997 Pontaic Grand Prix, pontaic grand prix, amp fuse

Question
Hey Todd, I have a problem with the instrument cluster. The speedometer and tach stop working. Speed odometer first, but most of the time the tach will still work and at times when I apply the brake the tach will drop to "0" until I release the brake. Just purchased the car and while troubleshooting found a 10 amp fuse blown so replaced fuse and speed odometer and tach started working. Is there any hope?

Answer
Hi Joe:
well the fuse blew for a reason. what fuse was it for the IPC "speedo" or what? if the fuse blows again the circuits that that fuse feed will need to be traced down for the cause of the short. Usually what I tell people to do it up the fuse in the box 1 size eg: 15 amp and then the different branches of the ckt use a size small like a 5 amp to each component that the main fuse blows that way the smaller fuse will pop before the one in the box. It's goo as long as the short is beyond the smaller fuse if it's inbetween the main fuse in the box and where you split them off that's not good it could melt some wiring in the car.. it's a chance you take to try to find the short. good luck :)
