Pontiac Repair: Trouble starting 87 Pontiac Grand Prix, pontiac grand prix, fly wheel

Question
Starting this winter I have been having trouble starting my Pontiac from time to time.  I will go to crank the car and the car will not turn over right away.  Sometimes it takes up to 20mins to get it started.  It is the V-8 5.0 engine. The car has a new battery, starter, alternator, new plugs and wires. It has been suggested to me that something is wrong with the choke, or the fly wheel - what do you think?  I have also tried Starting Fluid and that helps in a small way.  Also holding the carborator top open helps some too.  Thank you for any help you can offer!

Answer
Hi Stacey:

You lost me here.. it will not crank but if you play around with the choke it starts? If the car will not crank what changes after 20 minutes then it will crank? when it will not crank over have you tried to crank the car over in "neutral" if so the park safty switch is bad. as for the choke/starter fluid It may have an issue with a chokew pull off valve or the choke spring it's self. being that this is 23 years old the carburator may need to be overhauled but that is not going to give you a no crank issue.. I would also check the battery cables if they are corroeded at all replace them. make sure the ground is clean and tight on the engine block and that the small lead off the ground cable is still attached to the body. good luck :)
