Pontiac Repair: timing, pontiac grand am, engein

Question
I just bought new timing sprockets and chain for my 1995 pontiac grand am se with the 2.3l quad 4 I need to know where the timing marks are if possible a scematic would be extremely helpful.

Answer
Hi Kenneth:

the timing marks are as follows the crank gear had a dot that lines up with a mark on the block at the 12:00 postion the cagears have no marking on them they have a samll 8MM hole that lines up with a hole in the timing cover  you need long 8MM bolts to align the holes in the geads with the hols in the timing cover that is how you time this engne. if the crank is at the 12:00 position and the holes are not even close to the holes in the cover your not at TDC compression your at TDC exhaust. crank the engein over 1 more revolution and the holes will line up in the covers. Do your self a favor and get a new tensioner to before you do this job.
