Pontiac Repair: Rack and Pinion Replacement, inner tie rods, inner tie rod

Question
QUESTION: I had an accident in which my tirod was bent.  The rod can not be removed from the rack so I bought a replacement rack and pinion.  I've had the rack replaced once due to an accident.  I watched the repair man and even gave a hand once and a while.  I want to change the part myself and wondered if you could offer me detaied instructions on the removal and replacement of the part.

ANSWER: need more vehicle info to provide instructions, not sure if you have a lift but it is much easier if you can stand under the vehicle.  Also the inner tie rods are replace-able, you need a special tool to remove them but it can be done.

QUESTION: I don't have a lift, but I have a floor jack and jack stands.  The carr is a 2002 Pontiac Aztec front wheel drive.  Has rack and pinion power assist steering.  If changing the inner rods would be easier, what tool do I need and how is it done?  If not, can you tell me how to do it with the equipment I already have (I have wrenches, line wrenches, rachets and socket wrencher, plyers, sledge hammer, air tools, etc.).

Answer
the tool i have is a long tube that has removeble wrench ends that fit into it, a 1  7/16" is the size of the inner tie rod, you will need to remove the outer tie rod and the boot from the inner rod to access the nut.  Taking the gear out with a jack is going to be really hard, esp removing the steering shaft I would check with your local shops or stores to see if you can get a tool to replace just the rod
