Pontiac Repair: Bonneville Gearshift, floor shift, turning the key

Question
Hi Todd!

I have a 99 Bonneville that has issues with the gearshift. At first my key wouldn't come out of the ignition until the gearshift was jimmed back and forth somehow. This problem resolved itself. But now the car won't start. Turning the key to start and nothing happens - no clicking, no trying to start - nada. Again, I jimmed with the gearshift and it finally started. Sadly, I couldn't repeat the magical steps to get it to start again. Do you have any suggestions for me? Thanks very much!

I couldn't figure out how to search questions already asked, so I apologize if this is a repeat inquiry.

Answer
Hi Pam:

It can be a few things it can be an issue with the switch on the trasnmission with a part called a park neutral switch witch also is part of getting the key out on some models depending on a column or floor shift car. That switch could be bad. Or you could have an issue going on with the pass key system which is the factory anti theft system. the wires break off in the column and the car will not crank.. I think I would first look at the gear shifter switch on the transmission first.. then the wires in the column.. Will the car start when it's in the Neutral position? If so it's the switch.

Good luck :)
